@francisscottkey Challenge accepted.
I bet they only check the registry for the qualification.
Open regedit to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Then backup/export before changing, then modify the following to match Windows 11:
CompositionEditionID
CurrentBuild
CurrentBuildNumber
DisplayVersion
EditionID
ProductName

Maybe.
The other reason to do this is to push people to the online version instead of the desktop version.
Sonoma (10.14) is basically the only supported MacOS version that supports Intel processors. Mine is 7yo now - probably time to get a new machine anyway.
You're probably right, buuuuut there is another possibility to consider:
Tax information is really sensitive stuff, so inputting that information on an OS that isn't maintained for security does open a security issue. Maybe even a liability.
I figure it might be a combination of the two. Developers being slightly concerned raised the issue, and marketers jumped on it as a way too sell more product.
Kind of a devil you know versus the devil you don't situation.
Yeah, Windows sucks. Not going to get an argument from me over that! I don't use it. Yeah, all of this stuff they're doing these days seems really gross.
However, "well that's how it's supposed to work" is a lot better than having to admit that they were running on a platform that was exfiltrating sensitive information not to the normal and generally accepted spying eyes, but to some hacker in a basement.
Is it right? I don't think so. But that's the reality of the industry and society these days.
@volkris default Win11 w/ Copilot & Recall takes a screenshot every 5 seconds & stores it locally for parsing & exfiltration of that data to various Microsoft servers. They also demand you give up 50-150GB of your hard disk space for this shit.
What was that you were saying about security & liability?
Using online or local vers are equally vulnerable to screen recording & keyloggers, sanctioned or unsanctioned.
Their devs are lazy or in on the scam for a paycheck
