"Don’t Wait for the Supreme Court to Put the Brakes on Trump’s Fascism

The court has given the country sparse assurance that it will push back on Trump’s unique claims of expansive presidential powers

The 'F-word,”'fascism, has recently seen increasing use in American public discourse—and for good reason. Some critics claim that the word, fascism, has been overused—and wrongly applied to the behavior and propaganda of President Donald Trump and his regime. They are wrong. Even though other words do describe Trump’s behavior, such as authoritarian, corrupt, cruel, vindictive, racist, or misogynistic, they do not wholly capture the political essence of Donald J. Trump. 'Fascist' clearly does.

What are the classic hallmarks of fascism? The analyses of several historians and other experts, such as Ruth Ben-Ghiat (Strongmen), Timothy Snyder (On Tyranny), Jason Stanley (How Fascism Works) and Umberto Eco ('Eternal Fascism,' 1995 article in the New York Review of Books) describe fascism as including these features: mythologizing the past; persecution of racial, religious, or ethnic minorities and celebrating violence against them; pseudo patriotic and militaristic spectacles; big business capture of government; suppression of civil liberties, including free speech; white supremacy, combined with a sense of victimhood; and male dominance. Without any doubt, Trump and his regime qualify as fascist, or at the very least, incipient fascist."

Well... right, because it's not really up to the Supreme Court in the US system. It's up to Congress.

SCOTUS has little real enforcement power by design. They only judge. It's up to the people we elect to Congress to really respond to a misbehaving executive.

Congress can impeach and remove from office, can withhold funds, can generally engage with the executive branch as needed. The Supreme Court is limited to judging cases brought before them.

@volkris

It's up to the oligarchs who pull their strings. We're no democracy. We're an oligarchy. We may as well call it what it is. Calling it something else is counterproductive.

@LevZadov you have proof that there is widespread election fraud?

You can prove that the folks in Congress weren't actually elected?

@volkris

*All* elections are fraudulent. Electoral politics is a scam. These people don't represent us. They represent their donors. Only direct democracy even *is* democracy. Anything less is a fraud and a sham. Government is an extortion racket. Its perpetrators are the enemies of the truth, justice, and liberty. If you defend it, you're complicit. Government is the institution that beat me, robbed me, and locked me up for something I didn't do, just to stop me from organizing resistance to the Vietnam War. So go away and quit trolling me. Otherwise I'll block you. You should be ashamed of yourself for defending such an evil institution. Blood drips from its fangs. Nothing in all human history has killed, tortured , starved, and/or imprisoned as many people as the governments of this world. Down with them all. Decisions should be made by the people they effect. Everyone else should butt the hell out. That means you. Start today.

@LevZadov

I didn't defend anything.

I asked if you had proof that the people who claim to be elected weren't actually elected.

Whether that's good or bad is a different matter.

@volkris

You're defending a sick and evil system. Shame on you.

@LevZadov I don't know how you go from me saying it might be bad to thinking I'm defending it.

I'm just asking you if you have evidence to support your own claims.

@volkris

What they're actually asking me is to let them waste my time, so after numerous requests to stop have been ignored, they're blocked.
