@jcct ... It was a Representative
democratic process that elected Trump.

A person might wish it wasn't a democracy since the people keep electing ridiculous officials. But that's democracy. The people get what they want, even if what they want is really stupid.

@CptSuperlative this change in the rules gives people money that they didn't have coming to them at the expense of others, and at the expense of the social security system in general, harming its fiscal stability even farther.

But yes, thank Democrats for that if you want.

This was a terrible law, a bad idea, it should never have been passed, and we need to hold accountable the representatives who cost the general public for the sake of few by passing this stupid thing.

@larryneufeld It's not so simple.

The Supreme Court ruled based on an incomplete factual record because they rushed the case so much.

It's not that the Supreme Court gave sweeping powers to suppress Free speech but rather that they were wrong about Free speech not being suppressed. They don't think this suppresses Free speech particularly.

Yes, they are factually wrong. It's a real shame. But it does not have broad application because hopefully in future cases the facts will be sorted out.

@servelan but we learned long ago to take Trump seriously but not literally, as professional reporters started to say.

Yeah, Trump promised a bunch of things that are impossible. His supporters know that, they are just accepting of the lies.

@FlipboardUK

The Biden White House is very disconnected from reality.

That's a large part of why its approval rating was so low and the Democrats lost the presidency.

@top-stories-in-tech-FlipboardUK

@arrrg Yeah but like you said, Biden was ineffective. All the rest of that didn't require any success on the part of the US government, and probably did better with the US government failing to really influence things.

Ineffective presidents end up letting the rest of the world do what it's going to do. I expect Trump to be doubling down on that.

@KekunPlazas but you're giving up power to fascists. You are declining to take value from their efforts, letting them off the hook for serving you.

With you off their platforms, that's one fewer non-fascist they have to worry about, one fewer good person influencing the way the platform is running.

You're leaving the fascists free to run wild.

@tychotithonus thanks, I might have to catch up on it. Although from your description, I might have to set aside a good amount of time to read through it 🙂

@arrrg I laugh because ineffective genocidal maniac might be something of a contradiction, as it's hard to be genocidal if you're ineffective at committing the genocide.

I bring this up because I expect Trump to be seriously ineffective. Even less effective than Biden considering both him personally and the circumstances in the US government.

So I think Trump is going to be ineffective, regardless of whatever genocidal, racist, or just plain dumb dumb dumb ideas might be in his head.

@tychotithonus who is djb?

I don't think I've ever heard that handle, which may or may not kind of support what you're saying here, If what's being posted isn't worth being reposted enough to really get around.

@info wow no.

That's just a way to get back to the controlling of other social media platforms that we are running away from, just with more steps.

@europesays The rules of the house are set by the entire house, not just by the majority leader.

@pdiff1

That's not how this works.

These explosions that are happening right now are expected. That is the stage of development of this program. If they were at the stage where they would put a human or even production cargo on the rocket, it would be a very different matter. But that's not what's happening right now.

These are test launches that are expected to go wrong. That's why we test, so that eventually the state of the art can progress to the point where it's a serious vehicle.

But yes, this program is still at the stage where explosions are expected, so we can laugh about them even as we use the experience to improve human knowledge.

@sundogplanets

@Crystal_Fish_Caves ...it's.a joke.

Keep in mind that a lot of us find it kind of, well, charming as we work in engineering fields and appreciate the bit of joking about the work that we do every day.

If you want to get serious and talk technically, then blew the fuck up doesn't get there either. But if we're just talking informally, this is a great way to describe it.

I think a lot of the general public realizes this, but if not, it's an engineering joke.

@LeftistLawyer Yeah but the thing is, often enough there's an alignment of interests so that the ones behind the curtain benefit from serving users, so their selfishness pushes them to do a better job for users.

It's not a zero-sum game.

@wjmaggos I'm really surprised you haven't heard those arguments since I see them plenty.

From questions about the technological design through questions about the centralizations on instances, which come with their own moderation problems, through issues with the general norms of the platform built on it, there's a lot of reasons ActivityPub isn't a particularly good fix for complaints against social media.

Even the fundamental concept of lack of central algorithm has led to users not feeling well served by the platform.

These complaints are not hard to find, even if they aren't obvious.

@davidho.bsky.social but then there's pretty much nowhere on the planet with unregulated capitalism, so... yay democracy?

@mrbadger42 What? You're describing that system. It's already built.

@muiiio Yes, it really is instance by instance over here. Each one functions a little differently, and each one has a different view on the whole system.

@PNS from the comments here and the video it sounds like he misbehaved so he was escorted out, and then he made a scene for the cameras afterwards.

As far as I can tell, he doesn't have the high ground here.

Not that I really care about a state politician trying to get attention...
