Cause for freedom-lovers to celebrate: #GitLab heads to IPO with $233M ARR and 69% growth rate. They are the reason that #Git today is still a viable fully #OpenSource solution. Without them we'd be stuck with Microsoft's proprietary #GitHub veneer. 👋 7 year user here. Onwards! cnbc.com/2021/09/17/github-riv

@icedquinn @samtuke I don't know about "supposed to", but I have found some projects that leverage `git email` to negotiate collaboration. Very interesting! I haven't found a good way to swap that into my organization, though.

@worldsendless Linus and co intended mailing lists to be the mode of collaboration as it was made as an in-house replacement for bitkeeper. Github came by and slathered social media over the top of everything. But the original developers intended you to just lob patches over the mail system lol

@icedquinn @samtuke Yeah, I'm torn on this one. My career is webapps, so I recognize the value of interfaces like gitlab/hub, especially for onboarding and project history. But of course the centralized github model seems yicky to our Mastodon-loving sensibilities. For email-driven, you still need an interface to track things. Hence, I guess, host-your-own Gitlab?

@worldsendless Gitea is trying to get federated accounts. They support OpenID of sorts but that ecosystem is a bit rusted.
