Firefox vs Brave: Brave is based on Chrome , and has some powerful hype right now. But what else ?

@worldsendless brave is trying to be self sufficient, mozilla takes soros and gafam money.
@icedquinn @worldsendless i can't find anything that states they actually took money from OSF though
@meowski @worldsendless its been scrubbed. only thing that shows up now is them being buddies with OSF and Ford through some other projects
@meowski @worldsendless i guess i'll mark it as retracted on /z/ until such a time i see the article again.

there was some article about how they were going to make their own newsguard with blackjack and hookers. can't re-find it, and it hasn't been added to firefox since then. it looks like they sold one of those projects to vox in the end and the only relationship i can find currently is that they're in a big open collective combine to work on AI censorship shit.

oh well.
@icedquinn @worldsendless directly taking soros money might be too cancerous even for them... although i wouldn't doubt it. they may have
@meowski @icedquinn @worldsendless Mozilla takes Google money. That’s most of their budget and this alone makes them hypocrites.
@newt @meowski @worldsendless it bothers me that i can't find the article for this again.

although the moz blog openly talks about joining ford and osf for virtue signalling. they did get a big grant to work on some globalist bullshit and people even reference it to dissentr getting yeeted :blobcatthonkang:
@worldsendless @newt @meowski it's been a long standing arrangement that google remain the default search engine and in exchange google pays micropennies for every search done through the bar.

this may or may not have anything to do with adblock (later ublock) being exiled from the feature set despite being the #1 addon for years on end
@worldsendless @meowski @icedquinn why did you even need to search that article? Mozilla’s financial reports are in the open.
@worldsendless @icedquinn @meowski but if an article makes you feel better, here’s a more recent one

https://techcrunch.com/2021/12/13/mozilla-expects-to-generate-more-than-500m-in-revenue-this-year/

> Still, in 2020, 86% of Mozilla’s revenue came from its search deal with Google. That may be down from 88% in 2019, but for all intents and purposes, Mozilla remains fully dependent on Google for the time being.

@newt @icedquinn @meowski Thanks. I'm not in the habit of hunting down anyone's financial records (which reminds me... I still need to do my taxes... *sigh*), but readable articles are good. Yeah, looks like the "Google is bad" philosophy is put to the test for Mozilla fans

@worldsendless @icedquinn @meowski google is a company and doesn’t have moral standing. What’s bad is that google effectively controls 2/3 browser engines we have now. With the third one being Safari.

Many people consider Mozilla independent, whereas in reality they are anything but. I wouldn’t be surprised if they either enrolled or buried certain features just because google threatened to cut the money flow.
Brave steels the advertising revenue from website producers, that's what makes it more than hypocritical but outright dishonest thievery.
