Lush to stop some social media until it's 'safer'

(Lush is an Online cosmetics shop / company I think)

This sounds like a really good opportunity for the Fediverse to reach out and see if we can get them on to the decentralised platform.

They are looking for an alternative that is safer, well we may not be perfect but they will have more control with their own instance

Same goes for Youtube -> peertube instance.

> "[Social media channels] do need to start listening to the reality of how they're impacting people's mental health and the damage that they're causing through their craving for the algorithm to be able to constantly generate content regardless of whether it's good for the users or not," Jack Constantine, chief digital officer and product inventor at Lush, told the BBC's Today programme.

the sad part is these platforms know exactly what they are doing

@icedquinn They will listen even more when companies start to move here, and bring their customers with them, lets make them all feel welcome and importantly supported in their move.

Granted we are not here for advertising, but as a way for people to keep in touch, share product lines why not.

What we need is to support them, perhaps. I lack the skills to set my own instance up, but others d have these skills.

That will create demand for more people to learn, these skills (inc linux admin) we are ideally positioned as people who are a) here and b) care about what the fedi stands for to help these companies out.

@icedquinn That head line reminds me of the ST voyager episode Scientific method, where the doctor likens the crew to being one large petri dish as the hidden aliens were conducting experiments on them.

@icedquinn I have just shared this on my blog so it should federate here too.

@zleap Lush is a major high street brand in the UK and probably lots of Europe (I've been to a few in Germany). I can smell their shops at the mention of the name.

@brian Do you think it is worth trying to get them on here though.

It may just start to tip the balance, my attempt to get mental health charities on here seems to have failed (so far at least). I feel really sorry for those on here who need or may need help .

@zleap I haven't been here long, and I'd love to see some return on the fee I'm paying for my instance, but unfortunately I don't see this as the sort of network a company can easily use to reach out. There might already be people and companies on the fedi that I know, but I haven't found any through the network itself. I've been following strangers, or learning of accounts by external means.

Would a company find this useful? I suspect not. 🙁

@brian I kinda agree with you, perhaps as they clearly don't like the way things are on Facebook et al, then maybe they can help make fedi better.

It is a difficult one to call really, the could use Peertube rather than youtube for example.

@brian Idf nothing else moving here could give us a huge amount of publicity.

If fb et al are scared or worried about what we offer, the publicity of people moving here, may actually motivate them in to making their platform safer.

If nothing else it could give us that much needed exposure to bring people here, but that would come with good / bad people.

@brian Just contacting the press office now

lush.com/uk/en/faq/contact-us

I am not sure if this is the right place, but they may be able to help me find the right people to contact.

If they get more than 1 e-mail suggesting the join ( I am including links to joinmastodon and joinpeertube ) they may take some notice

Paul

@zleap @brian They are global now (in a good way.) But I was thinking along the same lines.
