On this day 2 years ago, I joined #Mastodon and the #Fediverse. Before long, I pretty much left #Twitter because the community, interactions, and.. EVERYTHING.. is so much better over here.
I see some folks on saying "Here's my #Mastodon account in case #Twitter fails." My reaction is: "what makes you think Twitter is better, even right now?" Becuase, in my experience at least, Twitter ceased being better years ago. 2/
"But #Mastodon has so many fewer users than #Twitter!" people say. So I ask, "why does that matter?" What is your measure of a good social media experience?
#Twitter is presented by an algorithm that is designed to keep you on the site. #Mastodon has no such algorithm. It's just the content you ask for, no more, no less.
This creates a whole different feel. It's subtle at first. 4/
I suggest: evaluate a social media platform by the quality of your interactions. Is it literally worth your time?
And on #Mastodon, within a few days, the quality of my interactions was waaaay higher than it ever was in #Twitter, despite maybe 1/10 the followers. 5/
