Today, President Biden will sign the Respect for Marriage Act. It will nullify the odious act known as DOMA, which had enshrined anti LGBTQ+ prejudice and discrimination into law.
Federal recognition of same sex marriages, by statute, is an important safeguard, but we must still do more. We must now enshrine the protections of Obergefell into law, so that no state can deny same-sex couples the rights and privileges afforded heterosexual married couples.

@georgetakei

We have had laws in the UK for this for a while, good to see the USA catching up .

@zleap You guys are literally ruled by a monarchy and a House of Lords. Hopefully the UK is able to catch up with the rest of the world soon.

@BinaryBolshevik @zleap cute that you think the rest of the world isn't run by a ruling class.

@BinaryBolshevik

It seems no system is perfect, we are not ruled by a monarch, the monarch just signs things in to law, once the house of lords has debated, voted and passed that law which is still debated and voted on in the house of commons.

@BinaryBolshevik @AndyHarrison

Good point, the labour party wantto replace the house of lords with an elected house. Looking at the US system, and midterms I got the impression if the democrats lost the senate then bringing in new laws or perhaps changes to existing laws etc would be more difficult. I am not too sure on the details of that though.
