I guarantee you that brands are watching brands.town. @deadsuperhero already mentioned that he received letters from certain ones already.
The reason they're still in listen mode is because none of them want to have a Raspberry Pi moment.
If you're a marketer, here's my advice:
1. Start your own instance. Do NOT piggyback on somebody else's instance, especially if it's volunteer-run.
2. Have conversations, do NOT broadcast and call it a day.
3. Don't start with a sales pitch. Don't start with PR. If you're going to start with anything, start with customer service.
What I actually don't miss about Twitter is when all those brands started acting like people, as though they had a personality.
But at the same time, real people started acting like they were brands.
It was a hellscape where brands pretended they were personalities and personalities pretended they were brands.
Okay, so here's my specific bone to pick with brand marketing on social media.
If you're a brand, you're a brand.
If you're a personality, you're a personality.
I don't want to know if Subway is having a bad day -- they're not.
I don't want to know about your fake aspirational lifestyle that doesn't even exist.
Stop being fake. We know who you are.
Indeed, so a return to old fashioned customer service. I think we get that from small business, the small computer shop on the high street for example.
In terms of Laptops, I would like to see shops sell them withut an OS or have them so they are free software friendly, as much as possible, so if they come with wifi that works easily out of the box.
While I appreciate free software sometimes we HAVE to install that 3rd party firmware to get wifi working for example.
