Everything is open to interpretation, the story of fire and brimstone from god has some truth, well in the fact they have found glass in the area, thing is that glass was caused by meteors or similar hitting the sand, superheating the sand, forming glass, so the science and investigations explains it. At the time, it would have been terrifying for the people, so saying it was a punishment from god at the time, would make sense to people at that time.
