"Ignorance about an issue is said to be rational when the cost of educating oneself about the issue sufficiently to make an informed decision can outweigh any potential benefit one could reasonably expect to gain from that decision, and so it would be irrational to waste time doing so. This has consequences for the quality of decisions made by large numbers of people, such as in general elections, where the probability of any one vote changing the outcome is very small."

This is why I like fedi, we can make posts, and if we have it wrong or don't appear to understand something, rather than being given lots of abuse, we can be corrected in a civilised manner. Sometimes people not quite understand something, or have the wrong idea, which is fine, it is how others react that can make a real difference.

@zleap Yes, but at the same time fedi makes it very easy to tune out things you don't want to see, reinforcing "rational ignorance".

It is more comfortable to stay in a bubble with one's views never being challenged.

In my short time here I have already been blocked by two people, not for abuse, but for disagreeing or sharing apparently "radical" ideas.
