I am from the UK, not only did we ban guns, but we vastly improved school security, school have locked gates and intercoms so you need to buzz to be let in. All visitors MUST sign in, be supervised while on site, contractors need to sign in and have a badge, so security is much better.
I think to deal with school shootings (or any intruder) takes more than simply banning guns you make schools more secure.
Nothing will change until the US accepts there a problem.
@zleap @danwentzel Absolutely.
Not mine. The university where I teach is open to anyone who wants to walk in.
I teach two classes a week in a third-floor room where the exterior wall is 100% glass windows. Across the street is a building with a stairwell on the side facing me. The stairwell has windows. Absolutely anyone could walk in there, climb the stairs, put me or my students in their sights, and open fire.
Even if the buildings were locked, there's a hotel within range.
It's the guns.
@zleap @danwentzel schools in the USA have stricter policies than any School in England, Wales, NI and Scotland. There is no single policy in the U.K. as education and the running of schools is not run from Westminster. I’m Scottish. The Scottish Gov have further tightened gun laws here and you now need a license to own even a basic air weapon
@Lassielmr @zleap @danwentzel Possibly worth considering a move out of this random firing range.
@zleap @danwentzel We don't have any of that in Germany and still mass shootings are simply not a thing.
At the moment there are discussions in our government to make gun laws even stricter than they already are. I'm all for that. 👍
No guns in the hands of private citizens.
@danwentzel @zleap Agree.
I love our healthcare system - gives me access to various treatments and check-ups.
@zleap @danwentzel Policies like those are the rule in most American schools. I suspect that most are as compliant with measures like that as schools in the UK.
It's the guns.
