How close is the Ukraine border to Moscow in relation to other borders.? I am asking this as given the reposts the Moscow attackers were arrested heading towards Ukraine, does Ukraine happen to be the closest way out. From what happened last year there are very few roads in / out of Moscow, so perhaps Ukraine is the closest country they can in effect safely get to, Belarus is allied to Russia (so that is out) other countries are NATO, while Ukraine does have a border, it is possibly rather ineffective on that side given the current situation.

Belarus is the closest, but as you say its pointless to flee Russia to Belarus. Ukraine would be the next closes, but the front line is not something I would try and cross. Latvia is not much further, and given there is a bit of Russia on the other side of Latvia and Lithuania, that is where I would head.
We also have to remember that its only Russia saying they were headed to Ukrainian.
