I think the point being made is not just what is said but what is not said, how things are manipulated by the media so mis quotes are facatual in terms of what was said.
As pointed out we need to stop mis information, so we can seperate actual 'facts' from 'fiction'.
One of the most misquoted films is or was Field of Dreams, with Kevin Costner,
I think another example is from John Lennon and the more popular than Jesus comment.
