Americans make fun of the European regulation on data protection (GDPR), regularly ("cookie banner law").
And then a data leak happens, and they're like: why do we even have this data around? who decided to keep admission forms for ten years?
GDPR is based on sound principles. The US should use it.

Big tech won't like that, the problem is, how would a party get into power without relying on big tech social media to promote party policies,

The west needs a new political system, I think the likes of Farage / Corbyn setting up new parties is a start, but they still need actual policies and traction to get seats.

So campaign using social media, if that party wins, they will come down hard on big tech, on a range of issues.

Any new party are going to perhaps have to adopt the fediverse and campaign that way so they don't fall foul of big tech terms, we here are privacy friendly so campaign to adopt a similar set of laws such as gdpr, dma etc in the USA would also get support from admins.

I don't think a political party on here campaigning in favour of big tech would last very long.
