Just to add that the pilot episode "The Cage" had Christopher Pike as the Captain, parts of this episode was also in the Menagerie.

When I read the post, I suspected the above was the case, so I looked up the pilot episode on Wikipedia [1]. This was a really good episode. I think Pike was the 2nd captain, the first being Archer (star trek: enterprise). I think there is also cross over with Christopher Pike in one of the more recent spin off sequel series, Discovery. I need to watch those again at some point.
