Eh Eye Ate Dub Yah ✡ :ally:

I've had some seriously bad luck with #Heltec #Meshtastic devices lately.

The last three V3s I've purchased have each developed a separate problem, making them unusable without modifying things.

One won't charge the battery via the USB cable. The battery can be charged, provided I add a second USB-C port and hole to whatever case I'm using for it, which is a work-around, I suppose, but it's still a pain in the ass.

One won't power up. At all. Period. Using battery or USB. Completely useless (except for the screen which I'll save from the board, because I'm a nerd).

The last one absolutely refuses to behave itself. I cannot flash the device, because when I attempt to, NO MATTER WHAT METHOD (esptool on linux - tried on a friends windows box with no love, Web Flasher, direct serial, nothing!), it displays "Shutting Down..." on the screen and just sits there. Forever. Like a completely useless rock. It will sometimes power on and start working, and sometimes enable the GPS, but won't allow me to connect to it via Serial over the USB cable At All. The only way I can configure ANYTHING on it is via bluetooth, and that only works sometimes. Assuming it's not taking ten minutes to re-start after pressing the reset button, that is. It's so finicky it's not even worth playing with.

I've started printing a case for a RAK #WisBLOCK based unit.. but I know I'm going to have to de-solder the battery connector and probably direct-connect a battery. Not my first choice, but all my flat packs have that TEENY-TINY connector on them, and the RAK has a larger one. This is not a deal breaker for me.

The case should print overnight.. then I get to decide which back plate to use.. but I'm looking forward to having a reliable carry node for once.

End Rant.

Rapidly moving my meshtastic nodes over to meshcore 🤘🏿

Going very smoothly so far. Meshcore is notably very fast at message delivery and delivery confirmations back to the sender.

Thinking I'll leave my primary meshtastic infrastructure nodes up and build meshcore nodes to deploy next to them so as the network matures I can do head to head comparisons.

Tom :damnified:

My original plan was to use the RAK11300 RP2040 + SX1262 LoRa module to transmit air temp/hum/qual. data via LoRa.

... which works... but the RP2040 does not meet my power consumption targets. I knew it was not the most energy efficient uC, but hoped the RP2040 ecosystem would balance out the power insufficiencies...

In the end I decided to switch to another uC.

RAKWireless also offers the STM32WLE5 as a WisBlock module, so that's what I will try next. [1]

For proper debugging a STLink Debugger has been purchased recently ;-) Waiting for the module to arrive, though ⌛.

#WisBlock #rak4630 using Android #meshtastic app. What does the blue light mean when it flashes on sometimes? Cheers.

Let's copy the Join #LoRaWAN Network Request generated by #BL602 ... And retransmit with #WisBlock ... Surprise: the Join Request succeeds! 😲 Which proves the Nonce and Message Integrity Code are OK ... Probably the BL602 Power Amplifier setting is wrong 🤔
