@freemo Okay, so you are yet another tiling wm user. I work with one guy that has bought into that concept as well. However, I just don't see the benefit. What is the benefit, and how does it outweigh the massive amount of tweaking required?
@Absinthe There is almost no tweaking needed or involved. It works out of the box. You **can** tweak it if you so desire.
The main difference is a tiling WM is geared towards users who prefer to minimize mouse interaction. The layout of the windows and positioning is all automatic and you rely on multiple workspaces as well.
In the end the biggest advantage is simply the speed you gain by never needing to touch your mouse. Plus they just look way nicer.
@freemo I think it works best with "text" based applications. But if most of the applications you run are GUI with optimal sizes and such there is a bit of tweaking to make things right. If I were living in the text mode world, I would likely focus on tmux or screen and just live like that inside one single maximized terminal window.
@freemo yeah, I get it. It just looks like a huge tmux session on my buddy's screen and if I wanted that I would simply do that :)
@freemo my friend at work showed me his "configuration" tweaks to make his windows open in reasonable sizes and shapes (including the gui ones) and that is what I didn't feel I wanted to have to deal with. (It was a really long list. ) Anyway, I really need to simply pair with or work closely side by side with someone that has bought into the concept and see if it fits. For now, not so much. :)
@Absinthe yea I can understand that. Also keep in mind this thing is hackable enough that he may have turned it into something significantly different than the default, and thus may be more suited just to his personal needs.
He also just may not have been showing the features that you are more likely to use. As I said it can behave much like a traditional WM too
@Absinthe If you work in full screen on multimonitors (i do that a lot) it does work well for tiled managers but of course there is less benefit for you particularly if you never need mutliple screens open side by side on the same monitor.
Either way using the type of WM I do it works well for all the cases including yours, so its a good choice for me at least.
