The etymological roots of "sanction" are Latin > Middle French > English, so it makes sense.

One of my favorites is "fulsome" which can mean copious or cloying. It originally had the positive meaning and then acquired the negative during a time when subtlety was highly valued. Now it can mean either. "Fulsome" has the bonus of being a homophone of "Folsom", which is mostly associated with the prison.
