I think using solar to harness the Sun's fusion actually has fewer steps than a fusion plant would because a fusion plant would use the EM radiation to boil steam to push turbines to turn a generator to move charge carriers.

A solar cell uses the Sun's fusion EM radiation to knock electrons onto a wire and move them along.

But we'll probably need both anyway to get away from that dirty oil.
