@freemo Hi, I noticed that mastodon (or at least this instance) doesn't allow you to change your handle, it might be like this across mastodon/fediverse since I'm fairly new to mastodon & the fediverse as a whole.

Would this be a hard feature to implement? I see it as a feature that a lot of the new users migrating from twitter might be seeking

@STORM

It would be hard to implement in a way that works across the Fediverse. You can change your display name easily, but your handle is part of the unique identifier for your account and posts, so changing it would break things on remote instances that use the old handle to locate resources.

However, you can do an account migration - essentially, you make a new account and turn your old one into a static redirect. It's a bit cumbersome, but it does the job, and it's less painful if you're still relatively new and have less investment in the old account. There's a writeup [here](docs.joinmastodon.org/user/mov) which you can follow if you want to start this process.

@freemo

@khird @freemo Ah okay thanks for the detailed response. I already knew you could migrate your mastodon account to a different instance and I understand now why it would break things :)

@STORM @freemo I read that the handle is only unique to each server—so there can be multiple instances of a handle across the fediverse. That’s because each server is an island unto itself. It was listed as one reason Twitter users were probably slow to adopt Mastodon after its launch.

@Pedant @freemo yeah i figured this out after i posted this, i dont mind my handle though lol. And i agree they will be slow to migrate over
