A new Iowa bill would allow 14 to 17-year-olds to work in mining, meatpacking, demolition, operating guillotine shears, and other dangerous jobs.

Under the business-backed bill, employers wouldn't be civilly liable if kids are injured or killed. The new Iowa bill would also completely lift a ban on 14 and 15-year-olds working in freezers and meat coolers, and allow kids as young as 14 1/2 to drive themselves to work.

Bill also would shield businesses from liability

The bill exempts businesses from civil liability if a student is sickened, injured or killed due to the company's negligence. A business also would be free of civil liability if a student is hurt because of the teen's negligence on the job — or is injured traveling to or from work. newsie.social/@toussaint/10982

@TheOldGuy

I'd bet there are >100,000 people in refugee camps around the world who would love to take those jobs.

Or is Iowa deliberately trying to keep their kids from living through high school?

@TheOldGuy If companies are people, what kind of people are they?

They are highly risk averse. They are intensely greedy. They don't care about the people that help them. They feel highly entitled. They are willing to spend money on politicians, to the extent of writing sample legislation for these politicians, bending (if not breaking) our common political structures.

In short, companies are asocial, if not sociopathic, approaching psychopathic.

Eat the rich.

@TheOldGuy
Seems to me if business wants the perks, they ought to take on the responsibility, just like real people have to.

@surfie
These are Republicans in a solid red state.

@TheOldGuy
So are they giving 14 year old drivers license? Can they vote now too? Taxes????
With great work responsibilities comes great taxe responsibilities, something they don't like doing!
My brother and I both worked in our families restaurant(I was 12 & he was 14) washing dishes, bussing tables, worked my way up from the bottom and paid taxes because I was on the books as a employee. Are parents drove us to and from work as needed, but it's wasn't easy until one of us got a car at 16.
