That sweet sweet academic freedom to work 7 days a week but I get to choose which days 😋

@OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter

@SJamesEllis @TheStrugglingScientists

Sarcasm on the internet is such a fine line to tread - yet again I have seemed to fail.

@JKrueckeberg hah no, I don't think you did. I think we both did one of those things where we missed the other's tone. Tbt, I'm coming up to a fork in the road akin to the OP and both moral adjustment and financial gain are decisive (and, sadly, opposing) factors; any advice?

@SJamesEllis

Oh I felt that "sadly opposing".

Honestly, I'm probably as lost as anyone else.

I just get really cross when (wyt) academics have a total disregard for people's material needs. How are you supposed to pay rent, your bills, support your family/friends/community and have something like a life only through righteousness and sitting on a high horse?

@SJamesEllis

On the other hand, don't go on about how you got a sweet gig at Meta or Shell when you well know they are the devil, haha. But these are my two cents on this.

@JKrueckeberg yeah. I can empathize. Attended a DEI seminar at a conference in Sept, the panel of which was exclusively made up of the exact opposite demographic group that needed a microphone (or three!!!) in that room. I did not like that these absurd theatrics, just as my questions in the q&a about the merit of this whole room were shut down "because, after all, we have a diversity of ✨️experience✨️ on the panel."

But the devil embraces the absurd in no small proportion, either. That side *can* be more damaging in its operations, but I also - maybe naively - think there is more (effective) potential for global improvement over there.
