At least it was not obvious to me, but you can use an *expired* gpg key to decrypt, to authenticate (SSH) but *not* to sign.
@aluaces you can technically still sign with a expired key by simply using fakedate so the program thinks the date is before the expiry. Yea its a hack, but point is you can do it if you need to.
