It is true that the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine is created, in part, by growing a modified virus in cells originally derived from embryonic kidney tissue sourced from an abortion performed in the 1970s. Crucially, however, the vaccine does not “contain” this cellular material. The viral molecules grown in these cells are chemically and physically separated from the cells in which they were incubated and do not make it into the final product. Therefore, it is false to claim, as the video does, that the process of being vaccinated for COVID-19 with the AstraZeneca vaccine means being injected with “aborted fetal tissue fragments.”

@icedquinn @freemo @angelobottone people are worried about the wrong thing with these immortalized cell cultures. the fact that they're derived from abortions is bad enough (and purification is never perfect so they avtually contain some amount of non-antigen material)

the bigger problem is the immortalizing reagents are cancer viruses which do end up in the final vaccine along with the antigen virus.

First off, the AstraZeneca vaccine is not currently approved or being administered, on pfizer and moderna vaccines are, so that is not the vaccine we are discussing.

Snopes is not a scholarly source so we can just ignore that entirely and skip right to a scholarly source on the issue.

these specific ones do not, no. i don’t know the method they used to extract the spike protein.

you are wrong that astrazenica does not have a vaccine approved for use though. the WHO has approved it, although its use seems to be getting cancelled in the countries its fielded for being ineffective.

If astrazeneca was approved and is actively being administered then that is news to me. Possible I just missed that though.

Not exactly how I would word it.. The vaccine skipped otherwise critical safety trials that under normal circumstances would never be allowed for obvious safety reasons. There are quite a few doctors who arent happy about this and countless efforts to block the approval of the vaccines due to safety concerns (and in some cases doctors even resigned in protest to make that point known). So there is no doubt a legitimate concern there.

But that does not mean the vaccines are dangerous.. what it means is we have no idea how dangerous the vaccines are, they could turn out to be very dangerous they could turn out to be perfectly safe. The fact that their safety is not garunteed to the same extent as vaccines that go through the full safety tests is the real issue, and the consequences of that wont be known until people start dying in a year (or not).

But here’s how I see it

If you take the vaccine, it’s basically just some protein in your body that looks like covid. Nothing really toxic except maybe in trace amounts.
It is near impossible to modify the genome.

While this is a new type of vaccine that is massively distributed, pharmaceutical companies have been working on it a lot, and they reduced risks over time.

The risk of getting covid is very real.

The risk of permanent complications, even if you’re young, is real too.

What do you choose, a small risk that things goes wrong, or a bigger risk that it can go wrong . For me, the choice is clear, I will
