🔴 **The Average College Student Is Illiterate**

Hilarius Bookbinder

“_I’m not saying our students just prefer genre books or graphic novels or whatever. No, our average graduate literally could not read a serious adult novel cover-to-cover and understand what they read. They just couldn’t do it. They don’t have the desire to try, the vocabulary to grasp what they read, and most certainly not the attention span to finish._”

@bibliolater @bookstodon it's almost as if 50% of people have an IQ below 100 yet most people go to college ...

(Yes, I understand the discussion and weakness around IQ measurements)

I do not think it has to do with IQ. I believe the wider culture in society has changed with advancing technology. Reliance on, and distractions caused by technology have brought us to the point where for a sizeable proportion of people, reading and more importantly comprehension is considered a superfluous activity.

Yeah, "grit" is a thing too, and not as many people have it as would be ideal.
I'm not 100% sure it's very different now, though -- think back to your typical "group project" experience...

@LaD_Hallo @bibliolater @bookstodon
There's lots of science saying "if you read more, you will get smarter and also earn more money," and even when compensating for "intellectually inclined people frequently prefer to read more" the effect remains.
So there's something to that!

If it turns out that education and smarts can't beat raw power, then raw power has the evolutionary advantage...
