@design_RG cyanobacteria is a photosynthetic bacteria and one of the earliest lifeforms on earth. It is also known as blue-green algae, but it's not really an algae.

The image is very pretty, but I had in mind some information link(s) about the cyanobacteria, and the great blooming you mentioned.
