Don't confuse religion with church. Personally i'm a fan of neither, but religion is supposed to be a personal thing, while church is the institutionalization of religion. Institutionalization of philosophical concepts has seldom led to something good. It is a vehicle to enforce power over people, which is bad in itself, independent from the underlying ideas.

@bloc @jambox @georgetakei I judge christians by their foundational document, the bible. The bible god promises to torture and massacre billions of people. Hard stop. Anyone still worshiping that god after reading his plans for people like me is fucked up. Like clinging to confederate flags because ‘heritage’. Y’all need to choose better.

@TheStormcrow
I'm right there with you. Not a christian myself, nor do I feel particular love for this religion. Although I think most other religions are also not exactly passionate about all those not sharing their views. To me religion isn't really desirable for a whole bunch of reasons.

@TheStormcrow @bloc @jambox@union.place @georgetakei You have to distinguish between the Old Testiment God, who is a punishing God who forces people to obey it's laws, and the New Testiment God, who is a God of love. Jesus says "I have come to fulfill the law, not to enforce it." this, the Old Testiment God does not apply to Christians. They are called on to treat every ody the way they want to be treated, i.e., with respect, concern, and love.

@bloc @jambox @TheStormcrow @georgetakei excuse me but whether you like it or not we came into this earth to follow certain rules if you don't like them then why the rules are to blame?

I'd say learn to grow into yourself first then comeback to me with the same perspective I'd bet you haven't even finished to understand the bible.

The best thing you all do is grab the confusion of it all as facts when looking deeper was also an option but being lazy is more appealing...

@Joefall @bloc @jambox @TheStormcrow @georgetakei There are no rules other than those we create & follow as a society and that evolve over time as our understanding of the universe & each other changes.

The Bible was an attempt to create rules, written by men using the guise of a fictional god to give it authority. Most recognise it for what it really is now; just a book with some good & some terrible ideas.

Unfortunately some people chose to turn it into a weapon to harm others.

@ipenning @bloc @jambox @TheStormcrow @georgetakei that's the thing we need to learn indentify weapons... A Bible is harmless because the interpreter will receive the info to then interpret on the lecture, while other "folk" went out of their way to the re- write new variations to it so it can be THE HOLY BIBLE to them,always beefin to other religions about mine is so good because yours don't do it this way, like
Even in both bibles state it's wrong, and yet we are beaten by the dark angel 😔

@bloc @jambox @TheStormcrow @georgetakei Well said! In Human evolution : Art the first visible developed language (cave & rock art)Then Religion was invented as an institution 2 control Our numbers as We grew & in habitations. Invoking "morals, standards and rules" until administrations were developed (government , law, police and military).

@bloc @jambox @TheStormcrow @georgetakei Philosophical discussion must not overshadow the tragedy which is the reason We are here though; in Memory of those Brothers and Sisters who were robbed of thier life, freedom , liberty and beautiful being !

@WizardOfOz
This. The meaning and usefulness of religion and church could be discussed endlessly, bit this is not the time and place. As OP originally intended, lets think about those who lost their lives, their relatives and friends and those who made it to escape this senseless tragedy. I'm sure we all can agree to the need of ending this kind of hate and that this is a task for society as a whole, white sensible education brought whichever way.
