eugen moment: first spin it that all the network is called mastodon, then complain when people use that name.

@bonifartius I guess this is about the trademark...
, and 'using' I guess in the most important context might mean people using the name / rebranding Mastodon as their own?

@freeschool this is about this post:

mastodon.social/@Gargron/10917

i would (remotely!) understand if forks couldn't have the same name.

the idea that you can't have a (sub) domain named "mastodon" which is serving something else than mastodon because of "trademark" is bullshit.

people can name their domains as they please and serve what they please. if i choose to have a domain mastodon.lolcow which serves goatse, i don't see why anyone would have a say but me.

to quote vixie: "the internet is not for sissies". i hate this dumbing down and lawyering of the net. i'm disgusted by it.

@bonifartius Hmm I get that,
It's almost like protect or not protect ( over-protect in case of Law perhaps ) and without would have many of these edge cases for popular things (dare I say brands or names or anything).

Even outright theft / people mascaraing as others (even harmlessly / temporarily) without 'some' authority that can 'enforce' it for those that have more of an intent and even monetary exploitation (of which system is itself but perhaps let's us playing in small playgrounds)

This above text alone shows how much variation and cross over it has... I put to you two questions

1. Do you agree the whole system (and people at top positions) base the whole system on this kind of control and enforcement (on various serious / less stuff).

2. Is it mostly the lack of control naming things or something else like the fact other people make a bigger game of what should be much less of a 'game' or perhaps not even a business?

3. Do you like law? (it's a stupid question but I thought it might have merit just purely for conversation within this topic or even outside to see if there is anything more)

@freeschool my problem is with the appeal to authority. authority infringes my natural rights all the time without any right to do so. if someone believes he's right when low key threatening legal action, it's bullshit.

it's one thing if it regards the product of work "mastodon the software" - i can respect terms dictating use of that.

telling others what they can do on their own property - their domain and server - is morally corrupt (and laughable!) and does only work because there are racketeering operations called states who have an illegal monopoly on violence, using that violence to take away my natural freedom to do with my property as i please.

hell, if he'd nicely ask to use other domain names it would be more fruitful than threats.
