I read a study that showed that a little as 3mm^2 begins to reduce efficiency of respritors (that's about one hair width all around the mask.
You can use a PAPR respirator if you have a beard, and I saw that some companies are trying to make PAPR's that look more like a regular elastomeric respirator.
