Uh-oh. After ten years this happened. So, I guess, I'll have a look inside my Kindle after all. Any hints?

Drum roll!
The glass backside of the display module shattered. Bummer. Replacements are hard to come by.

If anyone needs a mainboard or even a battery (1750mAh, 3.7V), let me know.

@freeschool No, it broke and that was what made the funny shape on screen.
My tip: if unsure, before doing anything, consult www.ifixit.com @iFixit@hostux.social and check if there's a teardown, repair guide or forum entry.
Other than that: after device 3 or 4 you get a knack how much force is okay and what to watch out for. Your worst enemies are those little plastic clips that come off easily.

Thanks. By the way, can't you cut your own glass? Is it really special stuff? Might not be far fetched to DIY (tiny handheld diamond cutter disc?) or find some expert with some lying around... I don't know about how special it is as glassy material or other features needed...

You'll need a diamond cutter, a plier for cleaving and a some exercise.
It depends a lot on the glass thickness. One thing you can do for practice: buy a pack of microscope carrier slides and cut a bunch. They're usually 1mm thick. For other thicknesses, get a glass sheet of about that thickness and practice.

GENIUS! -> microscope carrier slides ...or something that already exists and is suitable. +1
I did my own greenhouse glass as somewhat similar example (lol)

Oh yeah I remember now (pictures is there for the cutter I was using, though had more of an obvious wheel but it's there in that picture also)
