'Think back to the last research article you read. (If you can’t remember reading one recently, maybe you blocked out the experience.) Had that article been written by artificial intelligence (AI)—which, in this context, refers to an algorithm, not a colleague who feigns aptitude—would you have known?'

I think that's part of the problem as far as fidelity goes--these things were trained upon materials produced by a species with a thing for confabulation and prevarication. The experience is a bit like hearing yourself on a voicemail and saying "I don't sound like that" and then realizing that your voice does sound like that, to others.
@cyrilpedia there's a lot of hype about artificial intelligence generating text, but not nearly enough about natural mediocrity.
