I vividly remember a similar moment; hiking on a trail and near the mountain top facing a HUGE cow (thankfully not a even scarier bull) with wide and pointy horns.

I diverted into the rocks and treeline, while gently talking and explaining I was merely passing by and meant no harm, no need for distress, etc. My companion took a photo, we passed peacefully.

Coexistence is possible.
