@snow At Mastodon, I think it is difficult to eliminate only the NSFW image itself (I feel that there was a function that the administrator can keep the media flowing from a specific server as a link only display.). I think it is easier for individuals to do MUTE OR BLOCK itself for each account or server themselves (The example in the image I didn't do, I like it.).

@snow I also processed "Hide everything from my.dirtyhobby.xyz" in an instant too! :100a: In the other, "sinblr.com", "", "lewd.website" and "pawoo.net" etc… Certainly there are a little! :banhammer:

@snow @puzzl Hello Snow and welcome to Qoto!

I am glad you got assistance from Puzzl, as I was in sleepland for a while. Yes, this is one of the great things in Mastodon -- that every user has the ability to selectively Block any user, or even a whole instance, that they object to.

There are some annoying people, and people who try to make moeny merchandising erotic images and services. It's good that these have migrated to a few servers that are easily identified and blocked, as you have already done.

In some cases there are images that are worrisome to people in many jurisdictions -- as they might depict children in unpleasant ways.

The mastodon.social instance, the home of the project developr and one of the largest ones around, blocks all media, images from pawoo.net due to that.

I would just mention that if you do block that whole server you would lose access to one of my favourite accounts - the totally innocent Cat Posting Bot @catpostingbot

If you have any questions, please ask.

We have some guides for new users available too, if you like.

If you are new to using Mastodon, there's a good guide here: lifehacker.com/a-beginner-s-gu

We also have another new users guide, posted here : write.tedomum.net/rgx/suggesti

Casey Rollins made a video to explain the Fediverse, here :

@snow We as users can certainlu voice our opinions. The culture there in Japan is certainly different, there are things alloweed there that would be jail bait in a western country.

One of the main reasons instances were concerned about some of the Asian instances - and many blocked them wholesale, just to avoid having copies of those media files in their own servers (as normally, copies of images end up cached locally in many places because someone in that instance is following a remote user).

There is a good article I found the other day that you might enjoy reading - it explains some of this and the admins reactions to it, the culture in Japan.

@snow

While I have no interestest in any form of hentai myself and can understand why someone might not want it or lolicon in their feed due to NSFW issues I have to side with the japanese on this one. They are drawings, no one is harmed, I see it as a non-issue. The reason child pornography in photos is illegal is obvious, because it brings harm to the children depicted, it should be illegal. But to make drawings "illegal" just stinks of censorship for the wrong reasons.

I have not entered any such communities, but looking at their front door I see signs this is likely a front - with more in the back room, possibly a hidden forum somewhere.

@freemo

@design_RG

That sounds far fetched that its some front for some deeper more sinester purpose. I think it is ignorant to the nature of people. Most probably enjoy the drawings and that is as far as it goes. For a small minority some probably take it further. People will always assume the most vile small minority of any group is representative of the whole sadly.

I read a lot of blog posts 2 years ago when I started QOTO to try to reconcile my position on lolicon, much of it coming from the people on these instances themselves. It seemed clear to me most people who engage in lolicon and the majority of japanese (at least according to what I read) do not see it as related to actual real life children. It is a fantasy world like magic and other anime themes that arent meant to translate to the real world and for most people do not.

To me it sounds like the same argument as people who think violence in video games implies people who like video games are violent. Thats just not how humans work.

@freemo
I am not saying that all places who have this kind of postign will be dens of iniquity, but there will be some as they are in other places in the Net, and constantly looking for cover from law enforcement agencies.

The Medium.com article on why Mastodon was so big in Japan (dated 2017) is interesting, and I have seen some responses from Japanese writers. I liked to see the reference to the concerns of western sys admins when faced with the possibility of those images ending up cached in their own instances.

Reason why Gargron does not allow any media from Pawoo.net, and also has a long list of suspended or silenced instances at mastodon.social. (list is on his git hub pages).

@snow

@design_RG

I agree, there will be some places where people trade actual child porn.

All I'm saying is when I was researching the mastodon instances it didnt seem these were very popular places for that, at least not on the large lolicon instances like pawoo. It wouldnt surprise me though if some smaller instances engage in it as a point and purpose for the instance. Just saying its not the majority and I dont think its the case of Pawoo. Though I could be wrong.
