This campaign did cause some damage, as you mentioned. I think whoever started it must be happy, results from their effort.
Sadly, it's something not that complicated, if people took the time to search for an explanation and understand Privacy settings they might understand and not freak out in such a manner.
I was quite surprised to discover that mastodon.technology had us blocked, unilaterally and without any incidents reported, for that very reason.
The admin there apparently was led to block Qoto after a local user "suggested it" - we have a user here at Qoto who used to be there, and left disgusted with that action.
He had started a thread asking about that fact, and the user who originally suggested that ban posted in the thread and stated it was their suggestion.
Disappointing, that a Technology themed and large instance took that course (and wouldn't budge, when I sent a polite email asking, unless we did ban the instances they banned as well.)
