Had an idea, controversial, but what you all think?
project idea : Sniper Week
contents : posts all over the place, open to Fediverse, and tagged with a proper tag (to be decided).
* bio of famous snipers.
* cool arms used
* written materials (I have a German Snipers training manual, WWII vintage)
* photos, links to videos on different places.
And all done in the interest of #History, #Technology and general #Knowledge.
Without attitude. Without offending anyone, hopefully. CW if needed.
Thoughts? Thank you!
@freemo Exactly -- well said.
I don't want the crazies militia types around it -- and will make it clear that I WON'T even see their posts, in most cases, because I personally block some of the controversial instances in this account.
Curated content, is the idea, while open to participation and commentary. For learning, for all.
I was thinking about this the other day -- and I think I can articulate a moral justification on why being a sniper in war can be more acceptable than killing lower rank soldiery.
One shot, one kill. Priority target - the opposition leadership and command. Remove those and their force could greatly drop resistance and end a conflict.
Some great films, I loved "Enemy at the Gates" for example. Also, "Saving Private Ryan".
Culture, History, Geography (wind direction, speed affect trajectories - and we are aiming LONG shot).
An elite Canadian Sniper hit a target cleanly - at over 4,000 meters. That's 2.5 miles for US folks. Wind effect, gravty, all had to be accounted for. Even a .50 powerful cartridge's bullet will curve on a long trajectory.
I believe that is the current world record for distance, with a single shot.
@freemo We could decide as a staff team.
Would it be appropriate here? Or if not, it can be taken elsewhere, in case there's interest.
No macho bragging, chest thumping, that kind of primal behaviour.
I am pretty much a Cat, Lone Wolf type, and have though that in a mil conflict the sniper role would suit me perfectly.
@design_RG Well thing is our policies at QOTO generally dont allow us to tone police too much. Of course there is a point where it would be outright rude and attacking and we are going to speak up. But if a topic tends to promote a abrasive atmosphere we may have limited ability as mods to stop it.
But I would say if the topic starts to generate an undesirable environment we just stop promoting the topic and it should die on its own.
@design_RG Whether snipers are morally justified or not I dont think I'd want to see sniper week glorifying war or snipers. Knowledge is power, my hope would be its about knowledge and not about cheering on snipers :)
