If it's possible to create a p2p social network where data is stored locally I'm going to do it. At least I'm going to try. There are challenges though. But it's the ideal social network. Very decentralized and user control over their own data. #social #p2p #foss #linux

@libertyoftheforest technologically certainly possible, yet the challenge comes to sustainably build and evolve it such that it remains commons-based. An interesting area, where I focus now as former fedi commons janitor :)

Yes, indeed. Giving attention to the whole end-to-end software/solution development lifecycle.

In the case of p2p networking at scale this rises above the individual project and into entire (multi-disciplinary) ecosystems where e.g. open standards are fostered.

Here we as a commons are particularly bad in organizing sustainable efforts. Our 'technology substrate' is not commons-based and thus rife for corporate entry and eventually takeover.

Someone phrased that in excellent words a few years ago, in a long argument. Summary from memory:

Centralizing a decentralized network makes it more efficient. The natural force in a commercial environment, where value extraction is key, will make the network converge to a single company.

So we need a (sustainable) "expansive/decentaliatory" force that counteracts this, if we want to keep it decentralized.

I'm still searching for that force, though.
