Can someone explain in one toot how Mastodon works? also where are my friends??

thanks!

@favus Twitter, but it works like email - you can join a big provider, a small one, or make your own. Moderation works on a smaller scale making it easier to filter out the worst content before it's even on your timeline, rather than having to cater to the moderation needs of millions of users

@favus Sure... it works by having servers with users that talk to eachtoerh. When a user from one server follows a user from another ten the server becomes "Aware" of the other server and will pull in its tootts annd ultimately show this in the federated timeline as well.

You can block individuals or whole servers, this makes it easier to moderate without needing to worry about some servers having bad actors on it. You block the handful of bad actor servers (if you wantt) and have a nice clean timeline without needing to worry about banning people on an individual level.

In the end, it really isnt too much different than twitter on the surface, but behind the scenes it is a very different beast.

@favus Under preferences 'Enable advanced web interface' and you can get a more friendly layout with posts from your follows.

@favus you join an instance. You abide by that instancesxrules. Some instances can't interact with others if the adminfag defederates it.

You can interact with home. That's your instance. Fediverse is the whole network, outside your home. Personal is your notifications.

@favus I think i got it sorted.

Local: the latest posts from server you just joined

Federated: latest posts from all servers

Explore: trending posts from all servers

Home: your posts and whoever you follow

you have to join each server separately to post to that server, but can follow anyone from any server and their posts show up in your "home".
