That's probably the one way that Diaspora is better is its character count.

But that says nothing for its community.

@LWFlouisa I run a mastodon instance. My instance has a 65,535 character count.

It is so easy to change the character count that it is really a non-point IMO. Though it should be made easier (through a configuration option).

@freemo I'm anarcho-communist, and often find my views descriminated against, but then when I remove their comments, often they're complain of the same censorship that do to me.

@LWFlouisa While I would strongly disagree with you on your view of anarcho-communist I would never discriminate against you for it. As long as you engage in respectful discourse i would even encourage you to share your views in the conversations i have.

@freemo I am wondeering, if I can ever afford to host my own, would it even make sense to host a novel length word count instance? I'm not sure what 60,000 character translates to words.

Follow

@LWFlouisa Really depends what you want to do with it. Hosting my instance is expensive but because of a few specific reasons 1) it is open to the public and we have over 100,000 posts cumulatively. 2) we have a follow bot with over 8K follows 3) I have customized source code running on my server (for example the increased word count)

This means i need a dedicated host instance with a lot of hard drive space. 1 & 2 require hard drive space #3 means i need a dedicated instance.

So for a basic instance its only $5 a month. That will have a 500 character limit and you cant follow more than a few hundred people probably. If you want an instance like mine your talking $30 a month.
