@freemo What kind of education will it be when none of the staff are getting paychecks though?
Are there really enough volunteer professors? My wife teaches at university and earns peanuts. She certainly wouldn't do it for free.
@sda I was refering to free for the student, not for the teachers, they would still be paid.

Right, from the majic money machine... which steals majic from everyone else. If we're going to have "free" university, why not free housing, free internet, free food, free *everything*

No from taxes. The reason taxes make sense for University is because having an educated populace means we are more capable of earning wealth as a nation. So as a country the amount of money we increase our GDP by would be higher than the costs.
As with everything if the ROI is higher than the cost then it's worth the investment. It's the same reason we build roads.

State funded universities for non-superfluous careers is a good decision.
