@hugot I'm a Dutch resident who lives fairly close to amsterdam. The deciding factor for me is how you define your server rules and what promises you make to your users. I dont really trust the majority of mastodon administrators.

@freemo I understand. Trust has to be earned. We try not to make promises we can't uphold.

We have stated a set of rules in our about/more section and expect users to abide by them. If issues arise and rules need to be adjusted, we won't hesitate to do so.

This is a new instance, and we haven't moderated instances before so we will have to learn as we go. But our goal is to be a reliable instance with active administration and moderation :)

@hugot I think for many your rules will cover the basics and that will be enough for you guys to grow.

I myslf am really picky as are many others though. Some are scared of undue censorship, others are scared everyone like them wont be censored. Very few people, in practice, want a balance (ironically). At some point or another you'll probably need to decide where you fall more specifically.

@freemo
I'm afraid I sent you said it's a good thing because it makes a country look good, but it can also make a country look so bad. the reason it can make a country look so bad is because of democracy, democracy is to freedom and if you don't allow that freedom it can be called for authoritarianism.
@hugot
@freemo @hugot and I can explain further, censorship is a way to control people's minds.

@Please

I dont think its nearly that simple. Every instance engages in at least some level of censorship. Don't believe me, here is a simple test: write a toot that says "fuck you" to the moderator of your current instance. Repeat said toot every minute for an hour then create a new account on the server and do it again, every hour repeat with a new account.. Guarantee you before the end of the day your accounts will start getting blocked and the email servers you used quickly blacklisted.

You cant have a functioning server without some degree of censorship. The question is simply which censorship is appropriate and which isnt.
