@lupyuen No offense but fuck china.. only time they do anything involving "privacy" is as a sledgehammer to fuck its people over. A country that is striving to have 24/7 surveillance and facial recognition of its entire population, tracking their every movement, has no right to use the word privacy IMO.

@freemo Unfortunately some of us in Southeast Asia need to use China apps: WeChat, Taobao, ...

So this crackdown on data privacy is good for us, I think.

@lupyuen I would imagine the "crackdown" will just ensure its easier for China to spy and harder for companies. The latter is ok, the former not so much.

@popolon @freemo I get the feeling that China Govt is worried about losing control to these powerful apps. Hence the crackdown on Alibaba and friends

@lupyuen @freemo There is clearly an economic war since Trump. He wanted to force tiktok, the most successful social network at his time to be owned by an us company, so that just a protection of his own industry, and allow to avoid its own citizen data to be seized by us gvt as this can be the case for any us company datas. We are afraid of this in France, because French government use MIcrosoft to host citizen health data since last year, even if citizen protection official institutions asked him to not transfer data to this us company :(. Germany protect better his citizens in Europe. What I seen about Alibaba is mainly to stop to exploit sellers by forcing them to only contract with it, as Amazon does. This is very bad for little companies. Lot closed in France. due to Amazon politics. Alibaba still continue his business. In my point of view, sadly we can't account a so big capitalist company for thinking first about public and partners interest.

@popolon @freemo "1984" has the crazy theory: What if China created this illusion of an Economic War with US ... So that China Govt can consolidate its power over its people? 🤔

@lupyuen

Anytime the government says or does anything to make their own citizens scared always be suspicious of their motives. Fear is how governments get popular support for otherwise unpopular things and they know it.

@popolon

@freemo @lupyuen Sure, this is why so much French or us citizen are afraid about the people that officially govern their states. Huge companies are more important than whole country people. As China as socialist base, even with some capitalist mix, it constrain companies to respect people rights and state that should have the role to protect and serve his people. I believe that's the case on most countries constitutions.

I like the move of Chili toward a citizen collectivly made new constitution. They fight a lot, in street to obtain this. US backed Pinochet coup in 9/11/1972 was an huge pain for this country during decades.

@popolon

China is probably one of the biggest violator of human rights today.. The only people who live there and feel strong support for their government are those who want extreme conformity. Even just being a muslim and a chinese citizen can get you put in a reeducation camp. You will have a real hard time painting them as the "good guys" after the things some people I know have went through at the hands of the chinese government.

@lupyuen

@freemo @lupyuen Please stop follow US propaganda and visit China. I personally will never go to US due to stories about friends going there, and see every days state violence in France. Every time US want a war, the other country eat babies, have mass destruction weapons, etc… (about everything US and lot of NATO do in fact, ask South/central America, Liberia, North Africa, Central Asia what they think of US military invasion, torture, drug traffic (afghnistan become again first opium producer during several years, as during british colony, we had access lot of good quality and not expansive afghan hashish in France during afghan-USSR war, they often use chemical weapons (like monsanto orange agent, or white phosphorus one), kill journalist enjail, torture and kill minorities in prison, thief childrens organs in south America, etc), and you have generally Hollywood starting to make stupid bad/good guy stories to be sure everyone think that economical rival is the worst country. This is exactly what 1984 describe. What I see in China and the often racist and condescending articles I see in NATO newspaper are really different. If you compare to 19th newspaper or 18th christian jesuit monks books, you will see about the same kind of position about China. Strangely Japan was at the same position in newspapers until China started its economical and political reforms in 1980s. Now Japan or South Korea are the best example to follow, without default, and position of citizens (about what GI do in their country for example) are never asked. The same for current Irak, Afghanistan for years, Libya, etc.. Well this is containment strategy, cold war has not ended.

My expiernce isnt from us propaganda. My expiernce comes from people who fled chinas oppression and shared their expiernce with me.
@lupyuen

@freemo @lupyuen Sorry I know lot of people that goes away from China for economic reasons, when country was poor, and return sometimes to see family and a lot of them that come back definitively in China because economy and overall life quality is better there than elsewhere now. This include people from several minorities or that speaks different languages. There are so much in China, among them, I only speak simple standard mandarin, understand some bits of Cantonese/SW mandarin and speak very few basics words/sentences of Portuguese/Korean/Mongolian (Was so happy to exchange with it on a horse in steppe, and elsewhere, including Tapei).

@popolon

As I said those that love to conform to the masses and force that conformity on others are going to love the place. Its only the people who dont conform who are abused and mistreated. So the fact that you know some people who love china and their government really doesnt say anything.

You are literally defending a country that not only drove a tank over one of its citizens intentionally but then made it effectively illegal to ever talk about the incident, show the footage, or even look up anything remotely related to it online... Nothing you say is going to convince me a country that does that (and countless similar atrocities) is the good guy.

@lupyuen

@freemo @lupyuen The people in part didn't like their government, when they going out of China, but who don't love its own country (in the sense of family/friends/habits/food/...), that's no more the case, even if they are more or less defiant to any government, they now think the live is just far better now there than in France as the government listen people and work for general population interest. Where government is 100% corrupted in France and only work for billionaires and destroy public services.

The situation is the same in all country, if you try to critic the current government, you will have calumnious attacks from all the mainstream medias, be silenced or both at the same time. If you didn't tried it you can't understand it. This also including ban on social medias now. Twitter of opposition (like Trump in US, or some left/right party in France, since Twitter France is managed by LREM (president party), or on What's App, as all members of Podemos citizen made party that was blocked in Spain just few weeks before election few years ago.

China follow the path to forbid to critic government, but the result is the same, people continue to speak, people that wants to know, know it, most people ignore it. When there are problems there are demonstrations, even if its forbidden, they do it, and at the end people is listen in China. In France people can make lot of demonstration (I often participated) but are so rarely listened, and now are beaten, mutilated. President Macron asked by 3 times to people+association to gather there point of view on big subject (the first in 2017 about food/agriculture, the second in the beginning of 2020 about governance, and the third at end of 2020 beginning of 2021 about ecology, promising each time to follow most of their choice, and at the end just throwing their colossal well documented work in trash. In China they just experiment improvement at several scales, and when something improve locally, they enlarge the scale, and this method just work fine, as past past decades and present shows. They gained huge space against desert, improved live standard, and progressed so quickly in urbanism, housing, services, transportation, industry, education and sciences. And China share its public knowledge (not personal datas), as Xiangshan processor, probably one of the futur world leader processor, or previous progress of Longsoon on MIPS processors that was ported back to new MIPS processors owner, Imagination Technology.

In Europe several Chinese artists are cited as examples of censorship, like the artist Ai Weiwei, he is still free, he criticized government several times in China, it was enjailed for about 80 days for fiscal evasion. After several years, he goes to Berlin and then say he was not free in Germany, goes to Britain, and now live in Portugal. His wife still live in China. And I see lot of exhibition of Chinese artists in Paris where artists are depicted has against their government and censored, gallerist omitting some parts of the artwork as critic of China during Republic of China, depicting Sun Zhongshan/ Jiang Jieshi time, but they probably know nothing about history of China and just want to sell the rebel against communism art to some millionaires buyers. If you look more deeply about the artist, you will see that s-he lives in China and continue his critical works in China.

More generally in Chinese contemporary art, including in Beijing (including 798 art zone), you will see lot of critic of state or society, the main goal of art is to depict society and make critique of it, isn't it, every society need to improve by new ideas or critiques. But this is done the Chinese soft way, not by frontal attack.
