I'm trying to get a friend into the Fediverse. Can anyone recommend a Mastodon instance that is a bit more general purpose than Fosstodon? Somewhere that would welcome talk about privacy, tech, sci-fi and fantasy, politics, economics.
Is that too broad? Are Mastodon instances generally only so good because they are niche, or does such a place exist for him? Thanks
https://qoto.org is stem based so should be fine, all the instances talk to the others, so your friend can still talk to people with different interest.

QOTO is a stem instance int he sense that we require people who join be either STEM professionals or at least enthusiasts. So if that is a fitting description then your friend is welcome.
That said we do not require the topics discussed here be only STEM.. We are a general instance in the sense that you can talk about almost anything you want here.
Naturally being a bunch of nerds many of the topics you list are very common topics here.
