Apparently thanks in part to my article about Eugen caving to a Nazi's misinformation campaign there is an effort to defederate from matodon.social (not something im promoting directly myself)... Several of his users are getting scared and starting to question if they should stay.

I may not want M.S defederated, but maybe Eugen should not cave to Nazis then...

@freemo "defederate from Mastodon.social?" Is that an action on Qoto.org's part or the Mastodon instance community as a whole shunning (essentially blocking) them? I am painfully, awkwardly new to this scene. Words mean things but I'm not clear the effect.

@Romaq That is something the community is doing. I have not asked nor supported the idea of defederating from M.S

@freemo I don't believe the answer to, "this instance is being unfairly targeted and ostracized" is "let's ostracize the instance controlled by the guy playing along and BTW he maintains the code we all run on."

If the code is really open, forking the code to break control over the entry list would be a better option, but that only presumes a better option than "we trust that one guy has his crap together" exists. A "democratic" committee solution simply invites Truth Social to take it all over. It's hell getting people to join as it is without some complex scheme for a server list to on-ramp people to Mastodon.

Sometimes all options suck.

@Romaq Agreed, we need someone who isnt negligent running this shit.

mob justice is dangerous even when it's done allegedly in our defense
what angry mob has ever thought of the innocent victims of their reactions? what decent person supports the normalization of exploiting mob rage as a weapon?
who drives the normalization of instance blocking as a weapon, and why, when most situations that escalate to instance blocking (with innocent victims) could have been addressed with instance silencing, that doesn't overpower express wishes by instance users to receive messages from the targeted instance?
