Someone really needs to build some sort of logarithmic volume filter into linux... a way to keep the normal volume scenes loud enough to hear but reduce the volume on the loud scenes. This way you can listen to a movie in the middle of the night and not annoy your neighbors and not need to keep lowering it everytime an action scene hits.... how is this not a thing already!

@freemo it's called a compressor.
It's existed in many forms since around the 1920s.

@Pantangelini I meant to say, why doesnt it exist in linux.. it should be part of the advancec volume screen (or atleast some plugin for it)

@freemo try drc or
Dynamic range compressor. Also seen auto-leveler on some video apps.
It's crazy simple, so it should exist.

@freemo
Yeah, it would be a real nice thing to have.
Meanwhile, I simply use headphones.

ffmpeg has more than one audio filter to change volume range, FWIW. my daughter was so excited when I taught her how to script the tweaking of volume settings of her entire song collection :-)
