@bonifartius I went with the Tab Ultra C Pro by BOOX / Onyx. It is one of only a few color e-ink tablets to choose from, particularly when you want a full android 12 option.
@bonifartius Onyx/BOOX does have an account built in for their device, but you dont need it. In fact that make it intentionally so you dont need it (offering local LAN options that circumvent needing an account for much of the functionality).
So if that is your concern then any of the BOOX/onyx products will do nicely, and they have cheaper options (this was this most expensive product).
Also keep in mind color isnt worth the price for most people when you consider e-ink color isnt particularly vibrant. You get noticable but muted colors.
But if you want the colors it is the best you can get on the market in terms of color e-ink, in fact its the only color e-ink that is production ready and in tables (other brands have color e-nk but they use the same tech with muted colors).
@freemo yeah, the last ereader i looked at "locked" itself until an update was installed. i don't want to have to install updates to read a book.
what i really need is a reader application, web browser and a file browser which speaks to samba shares. i don't want to fiddle with sd cards or cables :)
i know that e-ink has muted colors, but i don't need that feature anyway - the only thing i can think of are comics, which i rarely read :) do you have a specific use for colors, or is it just nice to have?
@bonifartius I alredy did one update without an account. So you can definately update without issue. That said it is android 12 so updates will come around, even if they are optional.
This brand has all your usual android apps including a browser and the ability to use anything in android (including access to samba)
I have no specific use for color. Just that i often read technical documents and charts are often in color. so it serves a functional purpose to be able to see the colors and properly read charts in books. Math and other stuff its not so critical i guess and just nice.
If I use it for note taking, which i may not, it has the advantage of being able to draw in multiple colors if I care.
@freemo updates are great, as long as they are optional. the reader i described prevented usage unless the update was installed.
if everything android can be installed samba is no problem, yes!
yeah, diagrams and such are a use case. guess color also enables highlighting text, which is nice.
@bonifartius yea text highlighting in color is a thing if your into that.
All in all ive been pretty happy with it. I had first gen from this company from many years ago i used right up until today. The only issue i had with the old one was that the battery would drain even when off after a few weeks. But this new one has no issues.
I've been looking at Onyx Boox for when this Kindle finally gives out, thanks for the endorsement.
And no, I didn't buy the Kindle, somebody I know dropped theirs and messed up the finish and got a free replacement from Amazon. Amazon had them keep the old one and they gave me the old one. Still works fine many years later. I just use it with USB and Calibre, no wifi.
I've really gotta organise my ebooks in Calibre. With 429 of em might be a while though, lol.
If you just want an ereader its overpriced.
Also keep in mind the digitizer has noticable lag on non-boox note/drawing apps.
Other than those two issues im happy with this one so far and my last one (already listed my issues with my last one which was first gen and fairly old by now)
I was looking at them for the ability to draw on the ebook too. Just a basic highlight function isn't enough in many cases, especially when it comes to reference material. Or sometimes I want to call something out temporarily with a circle or an arrow, that kind of thing.
I havent played with that feature myself but im pretty sure its supported. I can double check for ya if you decide your interested.
It is, when I was originally looking into them I found this video. He writes on the document around the 3 min mark
I use mine mostly as just an ebook reader and i dont really even highlight textbooks too often.
That said i do intend to do some minor productivity stuff like writing and emails (which is why i bought the keyboard case).
@freemo thanks, will take a look, even if i don't really need color. it's so damn hard to get an eink device which isn't bullshit in one way or another, like requiring accounts somewhere.
