@Pat As a person doing clothes drying outside right now I also have to play the opposition and say it's not always straight or done-in-1
and this is why heavy machinery and heavy repair cost justify it for people as necessary...
Why ? Well, eco-ways needs a bit of clever Tetris multi-weapon style playing and customising it to your own life and having it perfect means 'making the process' perfect *for you* - so in the end you're not thinking of saving only in one way or climate but enjoying that of 'your being' and yes cheating the energy usage whilst you enjoy the hanging out to dry :) and doing more saving by doing it by hand, by sun, wind whatever you can get your hands ethically / ecologically!
Important is doing in a playful and practical way although it might not seem like that and more 'principles' - but with pride forward for your self and the occasional person to to say "Yeah I wash my own clothes not mum and hoover or other middle-people and hardware brands. " :)
So suggestions like this are more comfortable and perfect with a COMBINATION of options and techniques, which I appreciate this was 1 example of, but I feel it helps to show CUSTOMISATION OF LIFE according to your own principles and cheating energy consumption more as you go.
Usually always perfect is the many option of things so it's using environments or appropriate advantages and happenings around - in my case the fire stove chimney I hang things ON to dry things which is half hazardous but knowing it means it's more toward the safe side unless really fire stove is on intensely as the temp happens to be non-burning further down the pipe too - therefore adjustable temp (!) and more wet clothes go nearer on the pipe near the stove and get a nice evaporation ironing effect!)
So how it doesn't work for 'clothesline' loosely is listed below to help others see this reality I experiences and COMBINATION style I would say living it right now ...
- for thicker material it doesn't actually dry INDOORS (thicker OUTSIDE yes helps with sun - without sun maybe takes two days or doesn't dry especially with very low wind). So not outside is perfect for thin dish cloths fine in many type of weather - but jumper not.
Also if not dried quickly sometimes it's clean but smells damp - hate to say that but the water molecules do leave a damp smell which an iron (or pressing it on top of my STOVE) dries off and doesn't allow it to fester anything (and I'm not the cleanest and don't care but this is reality even for me! Hot-pressed drying indoors is important for thicker fabric woolly stuff)
- INDOORS space is a premium for doing all this hanging stuff - could be fun - I made an overhead clothes rack once on high ceiling - long rails out of reach that you needed a long stick and hook to get from up there! Did it for a lady friend one day and she came back from work and was amazed as most of it wasn't used and even more costume or special event, showing things can go high up for storage and perhaps drying :)
Any tubular or long metal and curtain style goes through big O holes screwed to ceiling but needs many more stronger method.
- SPEED - outside and indoors takes time AND management so even though I agree without machine - it's also a LIFESTYLE CHANGE SOMEWHAT (to let things be fragmented and take their own TIME or do it as a kind of LAUNDRY DAY but for everything in life one day to SAVE energy and LET IT SIT
- LESS CLOTHES - the more you have the more yo are compelled to clean - less clothes 3 of each is enough and then YOU HAVE TO WASH and not USE USE USE to make a bit laundry - consider it as pay-as-you-go or better management even with 5 or everything (some people have more - need to give it away or cut all material for dishcloths or easy pillow covers!)
- NOT TO WASH SO OFTEN / overwashing clothes is something to unlearn and ONLY T-SHIRTS and UNDER CLOTHES needed... until two weeks or if you spoil a jumper with a plate of food THEN wash - otherwise jumper is not that dirty... WASH ONLY AFTER 1 OR 2 WEEKS
I've got pictures of all these techniques.. but anyway I'm living it... welcome to DM me... serious ASK ANYTHING CRAZY I HAVE AN ANSWER FOR IT!...
