Claimed my name over at threads.net/@howardvtayler, and promptly discovered that I cannot post to Threads from a browser window on my PC.

They expect me to install a Facebook (err, Meta) app on my main machine in order to do socials? Nope.
Nope nope nopety nope-nope.
Nope on a rope.
Not gonna happen.

@HowardTayler why would you do that?

The whole point of federation (once they activate it) is that you can chat/follow without having to create a new account on each service.

Like, if you already have a personal email, do you also sign up for Outlook, Gmail, etc?

Signing up a new account at Threads is pointless. You should use your current Fediverse account and interact via federation. (When they add it, of course)

Opening the door to corporate stuff is a huge mistake and IS like signing / contracting to your data being mined / siphoned / copied elsewhere etc...

@sgryphon @HowardTayler The example mentioned ("if you already have a personal email, do you also sign up for Outlook, Gmail, etc?") is kind of weak at counter point question because kinda yes indirectly giving your email to others who almost CC their provider by what politics THEY signed up to is important - so they have do have your data / IP from simply email chatting. So who you are chatting to and their silo provider does things you 100% didn't signup so by using Fediverse is very uncaring,

Maybe the other person doesn't care what happens with your communication so that's measurably bad / negligent.

If any side has no considerations for such essential services / media / personal info, habits, data (+3rd party spreading behind back, being subject to US Laws (seeing what see possible with free speech / Julian Assange or even just the smaller stuff),

then YES however you want to rate Google/GMAIL, too many power-play data mining things to list, YES- all bad- and if I email you or others who ALL have GMAIL or OUTLOOK, then yes extra BAD, horrible, not email any more but non-private advertising and syndication to 3rd parties of your data (again even if you don't see it directly on screen)

So to make the parallel clear - if I'm contacting you or others on Threads it is similar (the data mining or 'who know what happening' is bad), whereas Fediverse measurably isn't that and doesn't care for those things (even the worst people don't care and celebrate keeping it small / non-corporate / DIY / some ethics and heart). What's that for bsky or threads? (not much, just another place tp share same suff)

TLDR Opening the door to corporate stuff is a huge mistake and IS like signing / contracting / being ok with entering your space and giving you videos whicke siphoning silently.
