@freeschool Hold on, checking if web crawlers respect robots.txt... Bing and Amazon do not care.

Conclusion: Web crawlers do not care about these settings. Why would random scrapers care? An MIT scraper was so badly written that it kept hitting the same endpoint many times over and over causing bandwidth consumption, increased bandwidth bills and sometimes degraded performance. If MIT can't do it right, will random scrapers do better?

@phnt There's 2 things I have a definite sense of separating and making clear:

1/ The act of saying no + not giving consent (not matter what we think they do as a result)
+ not leaving consent unsaid or assumed in any way or interpreted ambiguously. (like saying nothing or only shrugging while they take advantage of this position of doing nearly-nothing)

2/ I agree the many "they's" (their crawlers, bots/robots etc ) don't care / don't respect things themselves regardless of what is said or labelled and use it differently to what most of us public think.

So in case of robots.txt, Do Not Track, scrapers- it is all is upto them to decide at the end what to do with our data and for us to just gesture or make "token-gesture to say otherwise as a kind of signal of preference more than actually set choices in the data that is handled by commercial entities etc.
