@freemo I agree - saw plenty races get beat up over the weekend, sadly. I didn't mean this as the solution to the crisis, but it is one of the many changes I'd like to see. Multiple reforms are needed. Even so I believe the larger picture is deeper than corrupt cops. capitalism enables that corruption, and is the engine behind the US' racist history. Until the capitalism system finds itself competing against a cooperative one I don't think I'll see much change at the root 😕
@freemo capitalist* system lol
Yea the riots here in philly is similar.. Some people are getting its not just about one race, but others seem very commited to this being an exclusively black issue. It really just depends who you ask
Well this overlaps a bit with my view on civial guns as well.
My general take on it is this:
A civial should have the same level of access to guns and weaponry as any government agent (such as a cop or national guard) has access to who would exist on US soil and be allowed to use said weaponry against the citizens.
That means that if you allow cops to own surplus military equipment and use it against the people you have to also give access to that same equipment to the citizens (and at auction at the same price potentially)...
Therefore if youw ant to give the police an armored tank-like vehical, well you have to give it to the citizens, and if that thought scares you, well dont give it to the cops!
@Lwasserman @freemo No it exacerbates it. Surely that's intentional though. They must be itching to use the gear
@gawrsh yea I can see that..
The thing is, racism is a part of this, absolutly, but its not really the bulk of the issue. what we have is police brutality against all races and the POC just happen to get 30% 40% more of that than others.
So I dont think you will solve this problem on racial lines. The issue is much deeper, its about corrupt cops, cops who have eachothers back when another cop steps over the line. But people arent thinking on those terms because it seems to have been reduced to purely racial issues, and you cant solve a problem without recognizing the larger picture.
